I had the opportunity to take a pencil sketch I had done awhile back, and import it into Procreate.app on my iPad Pro to see about blowing it out, as it were. For what it is worth, I used a reference photo from Google for the woman to the left, albeit I cannot find it anymore. And I used no reference for the dragon on the right. One of the bigger challenges for me was trying to get the dragon to feel real, as it were. Or real enough given I basically have the dragon flowing from her hair.

Here you will find, you guessed it!, sketches that I have done over the years.
In the past few years I’ve transitioned to mostly digital starting out on iPad Pro with Procreate.app. However, I’ve recently bought a used (new for me) Wacom Cintiq 22HD Touch and Corel Painter 2019 (macOS) to my toolset.
Given I find other people’s sharing of their process hugely educational, whenever I post I do my best to show my work in all its stages. And there is often a time lapse of said progress added, too. Again, I find all of this shared elsewhere hugely educational.
Hopefully you find this posts as informative as I find others who do the same. And do not hesitate to reach out to me via comments or directly if you anything is unclear, or if you wish for me to fill something out with more details.
And remember to share the love by sharing links to my posts!
Profile Practice
Over the weekend, I got a chance to go to Seattle. While taking some down time between activities, I opted to pull out the good ol’ sketchbook and mechanical pencil to do some practice profiles. It felt good to be able to rely on 5mm graphite and not much more. I love using my iPad pro, but I think it is good to remember the basics of organic mediums, too. I started out using a few reference sketches from an artist I admire, especially as I think she does an excellent job of quickly capture the female face with an economy of line that I cannot. But I felt a bit guilty mimicking her own lines, so I moved onto to referencing images using Google search. The goal was as much to get the essence of a female in profile than anything else. These are shown in the order in which they were done.

I’m a bit of a sucker for drawing eyes. They are always good for study, albeit inarguably my time on eyes is at the detriment of others studies that I ought to be doing such as the rest of the face and anatomy. Nevertheless, I thought I’d share three eye studies I did over three consecutive evenings.

Well, day 1 is over at NorwesCon 40. To be clear, it’s technically day 2 of the Con, but for reasons that involve us taking a detour to Cafe Mox in Bellevue … I think we have ample reason that today is technically the start of our Con tour.

far above circles eagled eyes
wings lap air, seeking truth. any truth
upon a field of reddening snow
spired spears of fir stand vigil to the now dead
fallen they lay, remorseless in their rest
wind listens to their whispered secrets and repeats
although there are none remaining whom to tell
